AJT Dance

Classical Ballet uses flowing, graceful movements emphasising long extended lines whilst following a correct form and technique including turn out of the legs, port de bras (fluid arm movements) and pointe work.

Modern Dance combines ballet technique, with the energy of jazz, lyrical and contemporary. Modern movements are rhythmic and dynamic and often seen on stage in musical theatre.  It includes movements like isolations, high kicks and leaps.

In Tap Dance performers wear shoes with metal taps on the heels and toes.  By striking the floor, the feet become instruments to create intricate beats and rhythms.

Jazz Dance is a high energy and expressive style of dance, characterised by sharp turns, leaps and syncopated rhythms.  It retains the grounded movements inherited from African dances.

Lyrical Dance combines the technical precision of ballet with the freedom and musicality of jazz.  Choreographers use the lyrics of the song, melody and tempo of the music to tell a story or to express an emotion.  It emphasises seamless transitions, steps that melt into each other with graceful lines and breath phrasing.

Contemporary is a highly expressive dance style that combines elements of ballet, modern and jazz.  It focuses on natural body movement, fluidity and breath control, utilising weight, natural falls, suspension and rebounds.  It uses floorwork extensively.

Street Dance covers a wide range of expressive, improvisational dance styles that originated in community spaces like streets, parks and clubs.  It is characterised by freestyle movements, a strong connection to the rhythm, and speaking boldly through your body.

Musical Theatre combines singing, spoken dialogue, acting and dance.  These elements work together to build characters, express emotion like love, anger or humour and move the story forwards.
